Privacy Policy

Mentr — Self-taught learning  |  Last updated: August 12, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Mentr ("the app," "we," "our") handles information when you use it. Mentr is developed and maintained by J.P. Behler ("the developer," "I").

In short: Mentr does not currently require an account, does not use analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting services, and does not transmit your personal data to any server operated by the developer. Your learning history is stored only on your device. A future version may ask for an email address purely to generate a local identifier on your device (see Section 2) — this would not create a cloud account or send your data anywhere. The only external service Mentr currently communicates with is the Wikipedia/Wikimedia API, which is used to retrieve public encyclopedia content.

1. Information We Do Not Collect

Mentr does not require you to create an account, sign in, or provide any personal information such as your name, email address, or phone number in order to use the app. We do not integrate any third-party analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting software development kits (SDKs). We do not use cookies, advertising identifiers, or tracking technologies of any kind.

2. Possible Future Use of Email Address

Mentr does not currently ask for or use an email address. However, a future version of the app may ask you to provide an email address for the limited purpose of generating a unique identifier (such as a primary key or UUID) within the app's local SQLite database. This identifier would be used only to distinguish your local records from one another on-device (for example, if the app later supports multiple local profiles) and would not, by itself, create a cloud-based account, be transmitted to any server, or be shared with any third party.

If this feature is introduced, this Privacy Policy will be updated in advance to describe it in full, and the "Last updated" date above will reflect that change.

3. Information Stored On Your Device

To provide its core feature — suggesting topics based on what you've explored — Mentr stores certain information locally on your device, using a local SQLite database (via expo-sqlite). This includes:

This information is stored exclusively on your device. It is never automatically transmitted to the developer, to Google, or to any third party. We have no server, and no ability to view, access, or collect this data remotely.

4. Manual Backup & Restore

Mentr includes an optional feature that lets you export a backup of your local database to a file, and later import it (for example, to move your learning history to a new device). When you use this feature:

5. Data Sent to Third Parties

Mentr retrieves article content, summaries, and related topics from the public Wikipedia Action API, operated by the Wikimedia Foundation. When you search for or view a topic, the topic name or search term is sent to Wikimedia's servers over HTTPS in order to fetch the relevant content. No other information about you (such as a device identifier or account information, since none exists) is attached to these requests beyond what is standard for any web request (e.g. IP address, as received by Wikimedia's own infrastructure).

This data exchange is governed by the Wikimedia Foundation's own Privacy Policy, which we encourage you to review. The developer has no access to, and does not receive copies of, the requests made between your device and Wikimedia's servers.

6. Framework & Platform Components

Mentr is built using the Expo framework and its associated libraries (including expo-sqlite, expo-image, expo-sharing, expo-font, expo-localization, and expo-splash-screen). These components run locally on your device to provide core app functionality — such as rendering images, handling fonts, detecting your device's language, and enabling the manual backup/share feature — and do not, on their own, transmit personal data to the developer.

7. Data Retention & Deletion

Because all app data is stored locally, you are always in control of it:

8. Children's Privacy

Mentr is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children, and given that the app collects no personal information from any user, this applies equally regardless of age.

9. Security

All communication between Mentr and the Wikipedia Action API occurs over encrypted HTTPS connections. Since your learning history never leaves your device unless you explicitly export it yourself, its security is primarily governed by your own device's security (e.g. screen lock, encryption at rest provided by your operating system).

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example to reflect new app features or changes in applicable law. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect the most recent revision. Continued use of Mentr after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
